To promote and sustain tourism on Lake Garda, a
consortium formed by the Provincial Authority, the
Chamber of Commerce of Verona and the Town Council of
Malcesine, founded the cableway company known as Azienda
Trasporti Funicolari Malcesine - Monte Baldo, in
1955.
The company's Board of Directors is particularly
sensitive to the needs of the area, and in fact it is
formed by representatives from social and economic
organisations operating on Lake Garda and within the
Mount Baldo community.
The cableway is not merely an attraction to bring in
tourists with the aim of keeping the mountain economy
alive, it is also a source of employment for specialist
workers, and technical and administrative employees, all
of whom are needed to operate the system, making it
known throughout the world.
Not only that, but the cableway is also the basis for
the induced activity of specialist firms in the sector
as well as for those who - directly or indirectly - work
with the hotel and restaurant trade.
The decision to renovate the system, which carried over
6 million passengers in the period 1962 to 2001, was
followed by a lengthy and extremely carefully
thought-out design stage, based on studies performed by
the Faculty of Engineering from the University of Trento.
The subsequent choices form the basis of the success
that we can all see today.
